Turkey Time Saver

With so much cooking to do for Thanksgiving, consider cooking your turkey a day ahead. To maintain the safety (and taste) of the turkey, follow these tips: 1.     Once the turkey is roasted, let it stand for 20 minutes after removing it from the oven. 2.     Slice turkey breasts; legs and wings may be kept whole. 3.     Store in a shallow container (less than 2 inches deep). Refrigerate any broth for making gravy in a shallow container as well. 4.     Refrigerate loosely covered if still warm. Once food has cooled completely, cover tightly. Cooked turkey can…

Cutting Sugar for 9 Days Made Kids Look Healthier

Kids who cut processed sugar from their diets for just nine days had lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar — a finding that supports the idea that sugar itself is a major culprit in heart disease and diabetes, researchers said Tuesday. And it suggests that it doesn’t take long to reverse the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar. The study’s not meant to be the last word on the health effects of sugar, but it joins a growing body of evidence that suggests processed sugar itself can have a cascade of effects on the body. While other researchers were critical…

Want a Better Spring Garden? Do This Now!

Invest in soil prep now We have time to devote to soil prep now—the frenzied activity focused on flowers and fruits is finished. We can have our soil tested, put all those falling leaves to good use, and plant cover crops to our gardens’ advantage. These steps will result in an ever-improving healthy soil. Be aware that we can only change the make-up of a soil to a limited extent. For example, it’s not going to matter how much mulching and amending I do in the high desert of Arizona—those soils are not going to be hospitable in the long term for plants that…

Halloween Pet Costumes: Safety Guidelines

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s SUPERDOG! Costumes aren’t just for people. Pet owners love spreading the Halloween fun by dressing their four-legged friends up as superheroes, scary ghosts and famous celebrities. Tiffany Donhauser Thomas, a mother and pet owner, who works in a veterinarian’s office in Florida, says that she dresses up her Pyrenees mix on a regular basis, as things like a lobster, Batman and hockey fan. But while pet lovers often enjoy dressing up their dogs or cats in what they think are cute costumes, many don’t realize their pets may not appreciate it as much as their owners….

Drinking This Juice Could Make You Stronger

A new study found that drinking beet juice boosts muscle performance by 13 percent. Researchers were looking specifically at how nitrate-heavy foods, like concentrated beet juice, helped patients with heart failure improve muscle function. The small-scale study found that patients who drank beet juice had improvements in strength that you’d normally see after months of weight training. Study co-author Linda Peterson told NPR’s The Salt, “we’re seeing these improvements within about an hour and a half to two hours after ingestion. It’s pretty dramatic.” The study authors were looking at how inorganic nitrate impacts muscle function, and this isn’t the first time researchers have…
